West-MEC Adult Education Programs Spark Job Growth

August 16, 2016

During the course of this year's election, voters are concerned about the direction of the economy and job creation. State Legislature and Senate candidates are running locally and economics continues to be a highlighted issue. Although Arizona has a bright economic future and a high job growth rate, certifications and degrees are often required for prevalent employment opportunities.

Western Maricopa Education Center (West-MEC) has opened Adult Education programs for individuals to gain certification in industries such as Aviation Maintenance Technology, Pharmacy Technician, Precision Manufacturing, and Welding.

The most popular industries in Arizona are healthcare, aerospace and manufacturing. As healthcare and skilled trade jobs continue to grow, companies struggle to fill positions due to lack of skilled workers. The healthcare industry is leading in the field of job growth across the state by creating over 300,00 jobs and aerospace and manufacturing does not fall too far behind in employment increase [1].

Lack of certifications and skills are the main concern when filling growing jobs, and affordability for these programs causes major setbacks for those looking to receive this type of education. For example, the average Pharmacy Technician program is $15,500 causing individuals to take out costly loans.

“West-MEC’s mission is to educate the workforce of tomorrow with low cost programs that lead to specific employment skills. That is what makes our programs different,” says Adult Education Coordinator Suzie Smith.

West-MEC also offers adult education to active duty military and veterans within Arizona. The GI Bill is welcomed for some of these programs as well as VA funding at a fraction of the cost of major universities and other colleges that offer certifications.

As election day approaches and the job market continues to spiral upward, West-MEC is here to offer programs to the adult market helping to fill jobs within growing industries.
